Default my auto is getting messed up!!!!

hey guys,

i have a 98 civic ex auto with 144xxx miles on it. today i was driving home and as i took off from a light i noticed my trans isnt shifting from first to second till about 4K rpm.when it shifts it does it hard, i can hear it clunk. 2nd to 3rd does shifts smoothly, but before it shifts it kinda freespins. i let go of the gas whan it happened thinking it would shift. then i gave it gas again and i just freespinned till a certain rpm then shifted. i didnt drive the car agressivly in any way.
i have no idea whats going on.

im going to check the fluid level replace if needed. do i need to use HONDA ATF?? or could i go to napa and buy an ATF equivalent??

thanks guys

-steve

honda atf is best to use . when is the last time its been changed?
alot of people screw their transmissions up by not changing the fluid in it like you are supposed until the have a problem with it and then wanna change it and most of the time its to late. but yes change the fluid and hope it isnt to late.

best to use honda auto trans fluid for the tranny. but change the tranny fluid i'm thinking that should solve the problem, if not then its a possibly slipped transmission

i did a drain and refill yesterday. i used dexron III cuz honda isnt open on sundays. the trans works much better now. no hard shifts in 1st to 2nd gear changes . it will slip sometimes while switching from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th but only if you give it too much gas. i bought honda atf this morning hoping it will do better.

thanks guys

i have another question... how easy should it be to take the auto trans dipstick out?? cuz on my car it take no force to take it out, its kinda just sitting on top. i thought it was kinda unusual.

i drove the car around in d3 and the car goes through the gears fine from 1st through
3rd. my thought is that there is a pressure problem

thanks

yes from not changing the fluid on time, honda trans. have a internal filter and if the fluids arent change on time it get build up and starts to clog the internal filter. the only way to get it changed it to have the trans takin out and split apart.
about the dipstick yes they just pretty much sit there.
