Default Short Throw Shifter?

What is the difference between a short throw and a regular shifter? If it is just the length of the shifter, why can't you just cut some off your stock shifter and re-tap-it?

Thats a good question! Maybe it is just that people dont normally have the means to weld, perhaps!

mabe there is something I am still missing... is the rod bent a different way? I don't know...there's gotto be something because people say that after they install on there is less play in the shifter when it is in gear. There is 2 different kinds right? A short throw shifter and a short shifter?

Usually hte actual pivot point is moved up and there are some shifters that are bent differently. Like the one I have. I tried all option: the cut shifter, ebay cheapo shifter, and a more-or-less brand name B&M dual bend one. World of a difference. ebay was 100% better than the stock or cut stock, but the B&M still beats it.

And my friend has a skunk2 with a wieghted ****...great shifter, but not that much of a difference between mine which I paid $50 for and his which he paid $130 for.

Exactly what he^ said. The pivot point is moved to create a shorter "throw" between gears. Some models are the same height as stock, but many are slightly shorter. My B&M (no bend) sits about an inch lower than stock, and the throw is a night and day difference

EDIT: If you want to take full advantage of an STS, I highly recommend swapping your shifter bushings as well, Prothane makes a fantastic bushing set for around $15.

Bushings are a must! I'm actually thinking of fabbing some steel busings for my linkage...even the prothane ones are not hard enough for me(but are for most ppl)
