Default Speedometer Sensor or Instrument Cluster - No Other Choice?

Hi,

Our 94 standard transmission Civic has a speedometer that cuts in and out. A mechanic diagnosed it as being a faulty sensor. I replaced the sensor *twice* and the same thing is happening. Mind you, neither sensor was a new one, but both were checked at the wrecker's and I'm doubtful that *three* (including the original one) don't work. So I'm suspecting it's something else. From reading here, it seems the choice is the whole instrument cluster or the sensor. But there's a part that spins around that the sensor goes onto, the drive link I think it's called? Is it possible it's this? That it's not spinning around properly anymore? If it's not possible it could be this, then I'm concerned, as replacing the entire cluster sounds quite complicated and expensive. I guess I'm just hoping there might be another less expensive possibility. Any help would be appreciated.

The Hans

If CEL is on, check the CEL FIRST!!

If the CEL pertains to the speedo sensor, ding ding ding, it's probably just the sensor located ontop of the transmission.

If CEL is NOT on....
Problem: The speedo doesn't work but the odometer works.
Solution: Replace the cluster or just replace the speedo gauge

Problem: The speedo doesn't work AND the odometer doesn't work.
Solution 1*: Bad Sensor - Replace the speedo sensor in the transmission.
*CEL should be on
Solution 2: Bad Gauge - Replace cluster or just replace the speedo gauge
IF Neither solution above fixed it.
Solution 3: Check all wiring from the sensor to the gauge. Because the signal is disrupted somewhere.

Does CEL mean "Check Engine Light"? I'm not sure. And that isn't on all the time anyway.

It really doesn't seem to be the speedo sensor. Couldn't it be the drive link and *not* be a major wiring problem even though both the sensor and the odometer don't work at the same time?

Of course, until I know for sure what CEL means I'm not quite sure what you're telling me. :-)
