For those of us who have 4-5 months of cold weather coming up, I'm starting a thread for everyone to post their winter preparation tips.

I'll start. The car wash is your friend. :)

Greese up your car. Especially the hinges, locks, and the key hole (i think you are suppose to use white greese). Get your battery tested (don't want that sucker dying on you.). A battery conductance test is the best, i think places like autozone do it for free.

Um, learn how to drive sideways... makes winter a lot more fun.:D

No but really... if you take lots of short trips, every now and then run your heater with the A/C and circulate on, for at least an hour. This will dry the inside of your car up. Even if you can't see snow or water, it loves to melt through the carpet then refreeze under the carpet.

get your car oiled (rustproofed) ..this is the second time i got mine done, and i got a can of rust check and spraied where the guys missed or couldent get to..it might be all oily under the hood and in places but in the summer you can clean it all up and it wont be rusty!!!!...i just finished all my winter prep...but i dident have a chance to wax[:@]

I'm puttign vaseline in the wheel wells and flushing the colling system and going to the winter antifreeze mix. Also if you have to drive in heavy snow, lowering your tire pressure is a good idea. I run around 25 psi on the snow and it makes one hell of a difference to when I was at 35 psi.

Why's that? To keep snow from building up in there?

My car was rust proofed last winter and i only got it this july and it is still nice and oily. so i dont have to worry about that this year
My only advice is to make sure your ebrake works:D, like amg said make for a lot more fun. what i do for a tire combination is leave my all seasons on the back and some winter tires on the front,

Good rubber floormats..!!! If you have the cloth mats they get destroyed from salt off the boots.

Oh.. and a nice scraper.

mxs

You need at least two scrapers. Your passengers need to chip in. :D

Take the sun shade out of your car. You now ready for a winter in Southern Cali.

Try not to let your car get under a 1/2 tank in the dead of winter.

Get a plow and make some $$$$ in the winter. It would be pretty funny to see a civic with a plow.

If you live in a place that is really, REALLY cold, get an autostarter and a block/oil heater. Very, VERY good investments. I'm glad I have my autostarter, cuz it got so cold that the snow crystalized, and turned to powder, but the moisture from my warm car the night before, froze on the INSIDE of my windshield! That's *ssbackwards, going out to your car and scraping ice off the INSIDE of your windows!!! North Dakota S.U.C.K.S!!!

I don't know how annual winter precipitaion in ND compares to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (where i used to live), but I hear ya... We got almost 5 feet in 2 days one time, no joke. We were told to stay in our homes and wait for the National Gaurd to come dig us out.. Of course, being from up there me and all my buddies owned snowmobiles.[sm=badbadbad.gif]

aahhh...thats one thing I do miss about living up there, if the snow was so bad that I didnt feel like driving my car, it was perfectly acceptable to just hop on my sled and drive to work or school.

It's gotten pretty bad in Grand Forks. I've only been up here for a couple of winters, so I haven't seen 5+ feet of snow, but I have seen 60 below zero. And that is beyond cold. You stop shivering because your body's numb! [:@]

I hear ya there, but that happenes to me almost everyday in the winter it is common to see cars running with no one arround for about 10-15 minutes to let the ice on the inside of the car to melt., and here it consistantly get to about -25C, or -30C (-13, or -22F) on a daily basis, and that is a high. at night... i dont even want to talk about it[:@][:@] I Hate WINTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
