Gauge cluster is having a series of problems. First of all, the back lighting will not turn on at all, even when the headlights are on. This has been happening since I bought the car, can't figure it out. Recently, the gauge cluster only works when my headlights are on. This means the Temp, speedometer and fuel gauge only work when i flip the headlight switch. No idea what is wrong, possible short somewhere in the system? And just recently, as of two days ago, my odometer has froze. It has done this before a few times. First, at 224,000 all of a sudden turned into 810,000, then dropped down to 10,000. It worked fine for 5,000km, and now it has stopped at 15,000. This is just completely messed up!

 

I have a feeling the previous owner did a bad wiring job behind the cluster. You should pull it out and take a look at the wiring, but first, have a service manual handy so you can look at the wiring schematics.
