I bought a Sony XPlod in dash AM/FM CD head unit for my old Camry and it sounded worse than the stock unit. Absolutely NO BASS.
I used it for about a week and then replaced it with a Pioneer.
Night & Day difference. Lot's of Bass. So much that I now need new rear speakers.
This is without an amp.

well if you just take the hit, and spend the money, go with a RE XXX, preferably a 15" ported.
I want one of those so bad it kills because they have amazing SQ, and high SPL, but I cant really pay or it...

like i said, if you WANT to take the hit (on money)
Plus I hear ya on the used, i usually buy used as well. I would consider a Brahama as well, but they too are expensive. +1 for SQ subs IMO. If he just wants to buy a cheap sub, go with a popular name brand like Kicker, Alpine, or even RF, because they are all going to be lower end, and they are all going to give a little extra bumb to the music.

kinda expensive, but jl w6 and w7 series subs are the best i've heard so far. I've got a 13in w6 in my eg runnin off a pioneer deck and 600watt alpine amp, bass is crazy in my hatch. Pioneer decks give u madd control over the sound of the entire system, grip of sound options.

sony ehfin suck majorballs, i hate sony, everything is over rated and it sounds like ***. they make great tvs but not car stereo stuff. my favorite brand is alpine, JL audio even though its expensive, focal expensive too, soundstream, dyne audio. all great stuff. jl prolly makes the best sub in the w7, but its a lot of money, more than i will pay right now in my money situation

i 2nd kicker. i have a set of entry level 12" comps and runnin a 400 watt mono kicker amp, and they sound really good. if your lookin for a lot of bass, go with the comp VR's or maybe even a comp VX. comps are good if you just want some bass and a good over all sound, then go with them. if your all about bass, definitly comp vrs or maybe a square l7
