Default Optima Batteries

I've always been a fan of optimas, and I need a new battery. I never realized there was a problem until I used the headlights of my car to illuminate my garage while I replacing a light bulb. They were lit for 15 mins tops and when I went back to start it, I got nothing but clicks.

Anyways, I went to the optima sight and they listed the 51R yellow top for the civic.

Question #1: Yellow tops are deep cell batteries, why do they list a yellow top for the civic? The red tops are the starter batteries...

Question #2: Is "51R" the correct size? Can a larger battery be installed without modifications?

i have the yellow top (51r) in my car they are a great battery an the yellow tops are made for audio, lighting and electrical accesories they can handle a bucnh of **** thrown at it! as far as i know they dont make a red top to fit civics so you can probably find a smaller red top batery that will fit similar size and cca's

Hmm... I just find that strange that they would recommend a deep cycle battery for a primary application on a car. Oh well, I'm sure they know more than I do and have a good reason for it.

Thanks for the input, looks like I'll be ordering the YEL51R.

what you do is take out your original battery, take the plastic battery tray out and just crush the little plastic nipples and just flip it over so the tray is flat.
then take loose the starter wire zip tie conector that holdes it tight on the side fender and just snake it around to reach the positive side on the new battery (cause the terminals are switched from stock) and unfortuntaly you have to run a new ground cable. realy simple tho... cheapest way would just be buy a top post battery wire say about 2ft long and just rebolt it to the stock location if you want.

and heres my old battery conections... preaty ugly BUT worked nicely.....

also it starts my civic just fine. actualy starts my civic even beter.... cause lets face it its got alot more cranking power than the stock battery and still lots of power for anything that i add to my civic!!!!!!!!!
original battery voltage dipped hard around 10volts easy with my 1200watt amp.. now it never gets below 12.6volts on my hardest bumping at idle even at a stop light!!!!!!!!
i love it!!!!
