An amp is a necessity for subwoofers if you want them to sound good. Say you buy a subwoofer that is rated for 1000 watts maxor 500 watts RMS. When you buy an amp, you should buy one with an output as close to the RMS number as possible, in this case 500 watts. Don't pay attention to the max wattage numbers, only the RMS number. Get an amp with an output as close to the RMS number as possible.

To answer your question, an amplifier takes an electrical signal and amplifies it, or makes it bigger resulting in more power to the speaker(s)

no prob..I would say I have a "decent" system and I have:

1 rockford fosgate woofer....$200
1 480 watt amp.................$200
ported box for woofer.........$100

Basically you can get a good sounding subwoofer setup for about $500-600. Remember, as long as you get the amp's wattage as close to, or even a *little* over the RMS rating of the woofer, your system will pound.

Also depends on the brand you buy. Don't cheap out on wires either. Stock head units just don't cut it for quality purposes unless it has a built in eq.

I'll see if I can post pics when I get home
If you want a real cheap setup
look at a bazooka ela500.1 amp, 100 bucks and plays well
an alpine type E 12 inch sub, 70 at most
box, 20 bucks for wood and build it yourself (mdf wood)
