ECU code output can be obatined by bridging the diagnostic jumper and turning the ignition to "run". The diagnostic connector on most models is located behind the passenger side kick panel, and hangs next to the ECU. You will need a list of codes to determine which one comes out..
However if your "Check Engine" lamp is not on, you may not get a code. In this case an OBDII scanner will be necessary to diagnose the problem.
The other option is to get a repair manual and test the associated components. You may need to check for proper EGR and O2 performance, which can be done easily with a multimeter and the right instructions. If something is out of spec, R&R and retest.
The Haynes manual for these models is excellent, it contains lots of information on sensor testing and the like. IMO you should not touch anything until you've read and understand the procedures in the repair manual. The Haynes version is very good, but not even close to the Factory Service Manual.
