Default b16a vtec in and out

Hey guys, my b16a in my crx is not going into vtec at 5000rpm's and then when it does it cuts in and out, its been doing it for a little while now but I thought it was the oil was getting bad and wasent engauging the vtec solenoid, but after ive done a oil change friday and driving it around then rechecked the oil to make sure it was at the proper level ( it is ) its still doing the same thing.. ive also checked the screen in the solenoid and it was clean, maybe ive got a loss ground or something.. Any idea's ?

Don't b16a's engage at 5500rpm?

Anyway, are you running synthetic oil? I've heard sometime people have trouble with vtec when they run synthetic (I didn't have a problem with it though).

Under the passenger-side carpet under the dash, is the ECU LED blinking a code? A CEL code would cause the ECU/engine to run in backup mode.

code 71 - Misfire detected cylinder 1

this might help

*edit: were the 7 blinks long or fast blinks? If they're long blinks, it's a code 71, if it's 7 fast blinks, pause, and 1 fast blink it's what ronj said

not having a cat will not throw a code on OBD1 or OBD0

what OBD do you have?

Yeah, I think code 71 is only for 6th generation Civics. The Civic in question is a CRX (88-91), I believe.
