cam advanced 8 degrees...can I loose power?
I just put in my 105300 cam from Comp and Im using the OEM gear but I moved it one notch forward which is somewhere around 8 degrees advanced if I remember right. Can I loose power from that? I know I can loose a lot of top end. I have like no power on the interstate. Im hoping it's just from it being advanced to far. I have good take off up to about 3500 RPM in 1st thorugh 3rd gear. After that it starts slowing down. Is it just advanced to far?

Your are too advanced. Advancing the cam brings more low end power while retarding the cam gives much more high end power. I would put it back even and try it there. really that should be the best place for it. When you do let us know what it's like. I have one that im putting with a p/p head. Ask around i believe you can adjust timing with the dizzy but i don't know how

Yea you can. It's easy. But yea I think I am advanced to much as well. I guess Im either going to buy an Edelbrock or a Rage Racing cam gear and play with it. Thanks for the help man.

you can only adjust the timing on the distributor for the ignition, not the cam. the cam timing changes when the valves open and close, and the dizzy timing changes when the spark plug fires. (changing the cam timing changes the ignition timing as well, but you just need to change it back.)

I remember talking to my mechanic about advancing cam timing, and he said that it could be rather risky. Since the valve clearences are so close, letting off the gas too fast, and you could through a valve if I remember correctly.
