Default Crank no start

I still have some work to do trying to diagnose this, but here is what happened. I was driving our Civic and took a hard right turn. There was suddenly a loud, fairly high pitched rubbing/whirring noise seemingly from the drivers side.. I was almost home, so I pulled into the driveway and turned the car off. When I tried to restart it first sounded like the starter was spinning but not catching. After a while, it caught and would crank the engine, but the engine (a 2005 with a 1.7L) would not start. My first search brought up a video where the issue was a broken timing belt. In that instance, there was a noise as well from the same area. However, watching the rockers while cranking I saw movement, so the belt is likely still functioning. A little more searching found a possible issue with the crank position sensor wire bundle being damaged by the drive belts. It is currently snowy here, and sadly, the car is in a very inconvenient position to try to jack it up so I could remove the tire and look from below, but coming in from the top, I cannot find any seemingly damaged wires. If I can find my testing light I can possibly test for spark which I have not yet done.

My concern is the rubbing noise before this happened. It makes me wonder what was rubbing. Unfortunately, I did not pay enough attention to it to know if it sped up or slowed down with engine speed or vehicle speed, nor did I do what I probably should have done and left the motor running to see if I could isolate the cause of the sound. If anyone has suggestions on where to look, I would appreciate it.
