Immobilizing the engine to apply torque on the bolt is not the problem, it's just that my sockets keep breaking before the bolt gets loose [X(]

From the manual for an 02 they have the crank bolt torque specs at 181 ftlbs. I tried to get mine off by hand, hahaha yeah no way that was gonna happen. I'm hoping that with an air compressor I'll be able to get it loosened.

my haynes says to use a chain wrench.. so i would not think it harmful, if used correctly!
I used a chain wrench successfully.....the first time it worked flawlessly. Just be sure to use it on the flat belt portion of the pulley and not on the V-belt portion. The second time I used the chain wrench on the v-belt section (power steering) and broke the pulley.

Good Luck....let me know if it actually works for you.

what i did on my crank pulley bolt was take an impact and go reverse, forward, reverse, forward, reverse, forward,re verse, forward a whole bunch of times and finaly it came off.....always use a impact socket when dealing with an impact, otherwise your socket is just gonna shatter

For the mechanic who either doesn't use air tools knowing they tear up the threads of whatever you use them on, or doesn't have access to them, there is an easier way.

First of all, like riceburner said, always use an impact socket.

1) Stick it on a breaker bar.
2) Put it on the crank bolt.
3) Pull the coil wire off the dizzy.
4) Brace the breaker bar against a brace or the ground so it resists the rotation of the engine.
5) Hop in and give it a quick ignition crank.

Voila! The bolt is loose.

engine rotates counter clockwise therefore you would be spinning the bolt the wrorng way. that only works to tighten them up. ive always used an impact gun......625ftlb gun didnt work...boo get a better one. my 1/2 drive ingersol gets them everytime.

buy snap on sockets too... then you wont care when they break. is there thread locker on the bolt? because heat usually helps brake bolts loose with threadlocker.

Ooh, good call. I actually posted that a long time ago and got the same response. I guess my memory is just that bad... ANYWAY, if you ever need to get the crank bolt off just about anything else, you know what to do...
