to do a compression test you have to have a compression gauge with the rubber hose you screw into a spark plug hole...

step by step

1. pull out all spark plug wires and set them on top engine
2. pull out all spark plugs
3. screw gauge into spark plug hole #1
4. crank car for about 5 seconds
5. read gauge and write number down
6. screw gauge into spark plug hole #2
7. crank car for about 5 seconds
8. read gauge and write number down
9. screw gauge into spark plug hole #3
10. crank car for about 5 seconds
11. read gauge and write number down
12. screw gauge into spark plug hole #4
13. crank car for about 5 seconds
14. read gauge and write number down

all the numbers should be no farther apart then 10psi

hope this helps

Please remember to disable the ignition coil by pulling the ECU fuse. I just replaced a coil that I fried because I didn't keep the ignition from firing while doing a compression test.

You'll also get more repeatable and universal numbers if you hold the throttle wide open while cranking.

In addition to a compression test to tell you about the top end, connecting a mechanical oil pressure gauge will give you some insight to the condition of the bottom end.

Just to add, even though tlthehun just said it, it's best to hold the accelerator ALL THE WAY to the floor while cranking.

If your car is normally aspirated, I doubt you will need to replace the pistons, rings, rods and valves. If the compression is low, a new head gasket would be good to replace.
