i noticed that no matter how low the gain is on my amp when the reciever gets to to volume 23ish it starts to sound like a stock system...it just loses all tone and sounds awful and then when it gets to from 30-35 (max) it gets distroted even with the amp gain all the way down...problem with reciever?

Do you have compacitors for your amps(500+ watts)? Do you also have a ...I think it's called a pass over? It's were you can tune out certain frequencies. But, on the deck try to turn down the bass much as possible then turn up the gain on the amp.

from under the hood i have no idea, but if your getting a frequency sounds through the speakers or head unit, then yes, it's from a ground wire.... ^^^called a crossover^^^
