Default Please help a girl out! Engine Swap Details

Ok I am a chick that has a 98Honda Civic Ex. I need advice from someone who can tell me the details about this engine swap.
I want to swap a 97 Vtec into my car. I have the obd2 and so does this hx. However I have someone telling me that they can put a MSD togal switch in my car to make it so that the Vtec ingages. He said that I could turn it on and off but if I left it on it wouldn't hurt anything?????I want to know if this sounds right to anyone. Really is all I have to do is change the motor mounts drop the engine in andget this switchthen I will be good to go? I wont have to change my ECU?Please oh please help me.

You said you have a 98 Ex??? Then you have vtec, an EX comes with a d16y8 sohc engine which has vtec, kicks in around 5200-5500rpms. You don't want to mess around when vtec kicks in, the honda engineers put that their for a reason. And I never heard of no toggle switch that you simply press and vtec engages....

What exactly is the engine your wanting to swap in from an HX, HX's are ment for economy why would you want that?

ActuallyI dont have a vtec. The 97 hx is a 1.6 liter vtec engine and mine is a 98 ex which has standard 1.6 liter 127 hp I4. Basically I threw a rod and I have the option to get a free engine from my dad. But it is out of a 97 HXVtec. So I need to know what it entails to switch the 97 hx vtec into my 98 ex honda. Both cars have the same obd2 system. I had someone tell me that if I put the vtec in my car that the vtec will not engage unless I have the togel switch or I get the ECU that goes with the vtec.

lady, my car is a 98 EX d16y8 1.6L 127hp vtec engine, a dx and lx has a little over a 100hp while the Ex's have 127hp....

Anyway I see why you want to swap it, I thought you just wanted an engine with vtec. I don't know much about the HX, but I think you can hook it up to run as your y8 did. The heads should be virtually the same. I'll do a little research for you.

the harnesses will be different, the HX has the D16y5 VTEC-e and the EX has the D16y8 VTEC, the vtec-e motor is built for fuel eceonomy running on either 12 valves or 16 valves. I would get a service4 manual and look at the differences in the wiring. If you have the service manual, you can see the differences between the models and can also trace the wiring and rewire to your needs.

Cool i understand what your saying the only difference I see is the Vtec part of it. They are both as you said 127hp. 1.6 liter. If you could just tell me if there is anything tricky about the ECU not matching up. That would be great. Thanks so much for the help. I really only know what I have researched. I just would rather have someone who knows what they are talking about tell me that what this guy wants to do is going to work. he basically told me instead of changing the ECU I could have this MSD switch installed
Thanks

Ok this one guy says that there is no difference between the vtec setup with the harness. But the HX and VX use a wideband o2 which will require a couple changes to work with a 4 wire setup. theres also a EGR setup on the Hx which you prolly wont use.

Is a wideband controller what you were talking about?

I dunno if this helps but heres a site with info on an HX -----> http://www.b18c5eg.com/VTEC/sohcvtece.html

This is as much as I can help as I have never done this swap befor, good luck.

Well I assume that this is why they stated putting a MSD switch on it would change the situation with the Wideband o2 which is the option he said that he can doto make it work with the 4 wires. he didn't specifically say wideband controller. But now that you say that you need to change this in order for it to work with the 4 wires it makes sense. Thanks alot I now have more information personally to go off of so that I can be sure to ask the correct questions.

Hoping it works out well thanks fo rall your help
