o.k. what am i not doing right . book says to start from the crank, go around tensioner, water pump, then the cams, leaving no slack. but then when i remove the slack, the pointers are wrong before i even get to the next step, rotate engine six times and check marks again.

 

Put it on the tensioner last, making sure all the slack ends up on the long (tensioner) side. Keep the long stretch between the crank and the cam as tight as you can, even backing the cam off half a tooth or so to get it to line up with the tightest possible tooth. Then, when you pop the tensioner, it will pull the cam gear around that tiny little distance so it's in the right place.

 

i thought that might be the case but wanted backup.. im off to do that very thing right now, i want to put the spark plugs and valve cover back on.....

 

it seems no matter how i install the f'n thing its always off by one when i finish six turns. i have two belts. does anyone know the correct part number, so ill atleast know im strarting with the right belt? 125ru26 14400-p7j-004 or 124ru26 1440-p2t-004

 

14400-PR3-004 is what I'm getting. I know the first one you listed is the LS belt. I'll check a manual and see.

do the cams youre putting in have the hole in them like stock ones? if so, then set it up like this, and it will hold them at TDC, then its easy to line up the belt. also, do you have a stock thickness headgasket? if not, its going to throw off the cam timing just a hair.

no, its not stock thickness, its thinner, off by a hair i can deal with, but i double checked, and the more times i rotate the engine the further off the marks get. ill check for those holes though.

 

ok , got this done, thanks everybody. today i got my axels, but having a little difficulty finding mounts. first thingin the morning, the bad motor comes out, and the new is going in!!!!!!
