RE: 1000 mile oil change
I also have the 08 Civic & changed my oil & filter today at 1000 miles. I used Mobil #1 5-20 which states on the container that it is made for Honda. I used a Bosch oil filter & a fresh washer. It takes 3.9 qts &is a easy oil change. I bought a couple ramps that take the car off the ground to give you enough room to be comfortable & to reach the oil drain bolt & oil filter which are up close to the front of the engine. I will change it every 5000 & have the dealer service the transmission every 25,000 miles. A K&N air filter will help smooth out your car. Give it time.

Couple things. There is no such thing as "break in oil" maybe 30 years ago but not in todays world. Second the maintainminder doesn't have the ability to analyse your oil & at 1000 miles in a 4 banger the engine is broken in.

Just to clarify a few points. Petroleum based oil is obsolete when compared to any synthetic. If you want to use the best oil for your car then use a synthetic.

You should keep the oil that comes in the engine for at least 2k, untill the engine uses up the additives and the rings break in, that what the oil that comes in the car is for, if you read the book it tells you to keep the oil in the engine at least 2K, and then change it as much as you want.
On my vette I change the oilevery 1K, but that a totaly different animal (LS-6), on everthing else I own, every 2k, with Mobil 1 or pennzoil platinum.
Keep the oiriginal oil in the car for at least the 2k, if you want to change the filter at 1k, but fill the new filter before you put it on the engine, then run it for a few mins. and then add the amout of oil the engine needs to bring it up to full, then change the oil at 2k, with a new filter, and use synthetic, Honda wants you to buy a new car every few years, use a quality synthetic oil, and don't cheap out on the oil filter, a good filter is only a few dollars more, than a cheapo filter.
I like purolater, Pure one, filters I use them on everything I own, I have 1 truck,1 jeep, 1 vette, 1 honda, 1 honda quad, and a craftsman lawn tractor, all use either mobil 1 or pennziol platinum, and pure one oil filters.I never had an oil related problem
