That's usually the case. I think I got really lucky with mine. But if you have the time and can pull the engine apart yourself, it might be worth looking into rebuilding rather than replacing. Like I said, after a massive overheating resulting in a blown head gasket that warped the head, I got away with getting the head squared away and putting it all back together with a new engine gasket kit (top-end) and radiator.

You might (I use that word loosely) get lucky as well. But if you can score a deal on a replacement engine for a fair price, that might be the way to go since the car is such a big unknown to you at this point.

Tough choice.

 

my car won't start this evening. I am hoping its the battery which the light is showing for when I was trying to start it. Two weeks ago I accidently left the lights on for a couple of hours. The car had to be jump started but its been fine since then. Could the battery have drained since then and need to be replaced?

 

Completely draining the battery (leaving the lights on) and recharging is bad for the battery and it can only take so much. If the battery was already pretty old, what happened probably caused the battery to take the dive off the deep end. Take the battery to the auto parts store and have it tested for free.

The auto part tested it for me and they said it needed to be recharged but, it is still good. They told me if the car still doesn't start or start but, the problem comes back I should have the alternator check. I think they said the alternator. So we will see.

 

So, its not the battery. The car still won't start. When I turn it on it feels like its going to start. One guy who came by told me that it might be the fuel pump but, after looking at the car while I try to start it and calling a friend believe that its the distributor that is not good and needs replaced. I looked at the prices on those things and the cheapest ones are $214.00. Well, I think I'll have to wait a little for that one cause, rent is just around the corner. Man, mechanics are no help when you trying to work on a budget.

if the distributor is the problem then you likely just need a new coil. also, replace the rotor and distributor cap at the same time.

before you go buying stuff though, check for spark. idk how to check for spark, i've never had to.

Well, before i go buying stuff i need to find a good parking while i wait to fix the car. this is where living in the city sucks.

By the way, i just realized that my CEL light isn't working. It never came on, at all, not even for the few seconds when the ignition is turned. Damn it, I gotta make a list of all these things.

 

A little good news for me. I had the distributor cap and rotor changed and I was able to start the car and moved it. Though, when i went to put gas in it, I had a little problem starting it again but, eventually got it going. I am so far mostly gonna leave it parked until I can save some money for a engine swap. The mechanic that help me get car running told me that I should be able to get a replacement engine at a good deal.
