Default '99 Civic dying with check engine light on

90,000 miles. Last year it started...car died at an intersection, but restarted OK. Progressed to dying and not restarting, towed home. No spark. Replaced coil and ignitor, ran fine for months. Started dying at intersections or low rpm situations. Dealer couldn't find anything wrong (wouldn't repeat for them). Replaced fuel filter, plugs, distributor cap, rotor. Died again, replaced main relay located to right of glove box. Ran ok for a couple weeks, then the Check Engine light came on while driving, no other symptoms. A day later it would start but would die when you tried to drive. Towed it home and it sits waiting on more troubleshooting.

Looking for advice.

Thanks, Paul

Today I did the exhaust backpressure test with a vacuum gauge, the cat didn't show signs of plugging. Maybe a faulty sensor?

Sounds like it could be a dead o2 sensor. But the dealer really should have been able to tell if that was the case.

Have you tried running a compression test?

Turned out to be bad wiring in the distributor. Saw some arc flash tracks...powder gray stuff on the outside of the wiring harness at the distributor. Replaced it problem never returned.

Im glad you found the problem. Sometimes you have to fix so many things before you actually get to the real problem.
