Default Advice on buying a late 90's Civic

I need to get a new car and I'm looking towards a late 90's Honda Civic. Aside from the usual stuff you should investigate when purchasing a car (fluid leaks, uneven tire wear, shifting, acceleration, brakes, etc.) are there any common problems you might find in late 90's Honda Civics that I should look for? My budget is $2500 to $4000.

On the 96-00 Civics, the back door handles sometime don't work. A little piece of plastic in it breaks. You can fix it yourself, but just FYI.

Another FYI, The CX, DX, and LX all come with the non-vtec D16y7. The EX and Si come with a VTEC D16y8.
