Default Advice needed on Civic Purchase

I'm going to look at a 96 Hatch today:
I've had several Honda's over the years and have done everything from clutch install to swapping complete motors.
this one is advertised as "show condition" but "needs main bearings" how big of a project are main bearings? can I swap them with the engine still in the car? It's not a big deal if I have to pull the motor, I just want to make an educated decision on this buy. And how much work I'm getting myself into. I've been looking for a hatch for a long time (10 years) and don't want to make a knee jerk decision that I will regret. I've never heard of a Honda having main bearing issues, unless the car was severely abused.. any opinions on that?
Thanks in advance for any info you can provide..

Chances are the car was abused pretty bad, whether it was bad upkeep or just plain abuse, or both, for replacing the main bearings you would be better off putlling the motor, and do a full tear down and rebuild, or just a motor swap for a good motor.

OK... still have not seen the car, but if it is as described, I'll buy it on sight.

1996 Civic Hatch.. $900 I figure it is probably worth that much even with no motor.

IS this engine rebuild kit worth the money?

If not, what's a better alternative?

Thanks,

well with a blown motor... just treat it like a paper weight.... if one thing has gone bad its probably done its own chain reaction..... you sure dont want to do all that work and then find out youve got more problems.... best to just yank the motor salvage what parts you can.... and go find a junk yard motor thats in good condition.....
OR plan on a complete motor tear down and rebuild....

motors arent to hard to come by so id say go for it and look for a motor to drop in it....
