Buying a used Civic, need advice
A guy on Craig's List is selling a 2001 Honda Civic EX with a 5 speed with 97k miles for $4300.
He said the car was in a minor accident in 2005 (carfax confirms) where the front bumper was replaced.
He hasn't done any maintenance when its nearing the 100k mark besides replacing the brakes and battery last year. I'm bringing a buddy with me to check it out who has worked in an autoshop for awhile.
What would need to be replaced soon?
The KBB price is about 5k, so do I have room for haggling?

you need to replace the timing belt and water pump
and i usually do most maintenence routines when i buy a car (fluids and spark plugs and wires)
and the haggling will depend on how the car looks sounds and drives if everythings perfect theres not much haggling but if its beat up or something point that out when haggling

Timing belt is an advanced DIY job, but not difficult at all if you have proper tools.
Take the oil cap off and look for sludge in the engine. If you see black stuff in there, the guy didn't change the oil often enough and you will have engine trouble soon. Would be best to not buy the car.

^proper tools include an impact wrench or big@$$ breaker bar and really strong rachet setup i had to use borrow an impact gun from a buddies shop after breaking a few tools
its pricey to pay a shop to do it for you
and +1 on the sludge comment

Well found out that my buddy has replaced the timing belt in his 00'civic, so he can help me.
What else besides the water pump and belt should I replace? He said we would also take seafoam and clean out the engine.
How can I tell if the transmission / clutch are in good shape / if there is anything else wrong with it? Is there anything that a mechanic would be able to do that my buddy looking at it couldnt see?
