Possibly a bad head gasket. If coolant gets into the cylinders, it will release a lot of white smoke. What color was the smoke?

Its not likely, but its possible. Go take a look under the hood. See if the radiator cap is still on, if its missing it overheated so much it blew off, and you would see a bunch of white steam. It might have been steam instead of smoke. Did she drive it home?

Yes OK to drive but check coolant before every trip (while the engine is cold) and keep a very close eye on the temperature gauge. If temperature goes up investigate causes of overheating like the thermostat or the fan not working.

Many people simply replace the thermostat in any case of mysterious overheating. I would let it idle for a while and make sure the fan comes on.
