I dont know whats wrong. But if it is catastrophic, you very might as well get a manual swap. Believe it or not, it will cost you less than to fix the auto. Take it from me. My auto went out and I ended up paing over 2.3k to fix one little gear in it.

auto trannys have a shift cable ---could be busted

 

did you try to release the shift lock?? and what year is it?

 

there is a key slot beside the shifter to unlock it from park
insert the key and hold it in while you shift out of park
that's all the problem is, it may never do it again

i have an auto, and nothin has gone worng yet, but have you been shifting it like its a manual at all, cause that could do it, if you do it wrong, but idk, it might be that ****ing lock it sux...
