Default Which motor to turbo for street?

Hey guys I am looking to buy a donor motor to build in the meantime. First though I have a 93 civic ex, with 1.6 vtech (d16z6). Do you guys think I should even get a donor motor or is this motor good enough to build? If not what is and which is best for turbo?

How much money do you have? How much experience do you have? How much power do you want to end up with?

z6 motors are preferred out of all of the D series if that is the type of information you were looking for.

Ok, well, $10k should definitely get you there. I am not sure how much power Camaros etc put down, but I will guess a v6 has about ~225, and the v8's have about ~300, with torque numbers similar to the hp numbers. Of course, it is always a power to weight ratio in addition to driver experience when racing etc.

You are definitely correct on turbo being the way to go for that kind of power (especially out of a D series). Fully built (without sleeving), I have seen D series hold up to ~300 whp. Anymore than that, you need to be spot on with tuning I would think.

A basic B18c1 (Integra GSR motor) with a nice turbo can easily put you into the mid 300 hp area, with torque numbers in the mid to high 200's. But of course, that would add an additional $3k at least to your build. That $3k could go into suspension/tire mods in order for you to effectively put that newly found power to the ground.

I would price everything out for a D series turbo build, and then price things out for a B swapped turbo build and see which path you want to take. I would suggest against going to a B20 or H series turbo build unless you plan on sleeving the motor. A K20 swap with a turbo would be lethal, but the motor alone would be at least $5k I think. Make sure you set up a build thread in the project section once you know what route you will take for this car!

EDIT - Corky, if you are unfamiliar with the site, we have stickies in the turbo/FI sections going into more detail about this stuff.

I think the link labeled "CLICK HERE for everything you need, may want, etc for building your own 'Home Made Turbo Kit'" is not working right now. So that kind of sucks. Hopefully, we can get that link working again.

you could get a nice turbo kit/setup, fully built/sleeved/ported z6, clutch, injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter and upgrade the suspension all for easily under $10k, especially if you're doing it. And please get a tune, don't even drive it without a base map.

I'm running around 300whp, still being safe, but with a sleeved block you could push so much more boost and not even worry about it. Problem though is traction...

D-Series motors when turbocharged are torque monsters!
