Default New to honda, what to look for?

Given the gas prices and the fact that I currently drive a 3/4 ton diesel truck, I am looking for a daily driver. I have heard that my best bet as for as reliability and gas milage is the honda civic. I am posting to ask you guys what I can get and what I should look for in the $4,000 range. I want it to be a 5 speed. I think from reading on the internet that I would want an EX. Anything you guys can share with me I would appreciate. What kind of milage your getting, best year, etc. I am not looking to mod this car at all. Thanks, Joe

Civics are reliable and can be driven to high mileage. I drive a 6th generation (96-00) 97 Civic 5-speed and get 30 mpg from a mix of freeway and city driving, primarily the latter. As I understand it, 5th generation (92-95) Civics get better mileage, possibly in the high 30s. You could likely purchase a very good 5th or 6th generation Civic within your price range or possibly even lower.
