yeah i bought my 06 coupe 3 months ago. when you redline it, you can hear the vtec but not nearly as much as in other models. by the way i am averaging 35 mpg. all kinds of driving. every time i fill up its a lower price bout time.

No JP, you're not wrong. The SI has an entirely different setup from the LX/EX models The SI produces around 195 hp (I don't remember the exact number) while my EX only puts out 140, I think. At any rate, VTEC on the LX/EX models is only active at steady state (no acceleration or deceleration from what I understand) and only between about 1500 and 3500 rpms. Anywhere else and the engine is running on a fixed cam profile just like any non-VTEC engine. I can only assume that it's working as I'm getting fuel economy at to "slightly" better than what the EPA estimates. I can live with that!

VTEC or not, if you're in the lower three gears, floor it and it should reach redline. It'll just depend on how fast it reaches redline!

I would think that the owners manual for the car would state whether or not your engine is VTEC equipped in the specifications section. Beyond that, I'm not sure how you'd know. The Honda engines that VTEC is tuned for maximum performance are very noticable when they reach that cross over. The most notable example of that, that I've got personal experience with, is the S2000. At wide open throttle, especially in the lower three gears, when you reach 6000 rpm it's "Katy bar the door!" There's a big surge in power that's almost unreal for a 2.0 to 2.2 L 4-cylinder. Obviously, not all of them are that noticable.

dont get confused if ur engine doesnt say v-tec, if u have a 96-00 D16Y8 EX or SI then it is a v-tec engine. the v-tec will only engage if u go past 5500 rpms. ill try to get a video of my car so u can see wht i mean
