Yeah, it's a husband and wife shop and there were a few big block v8s in front of me.

It seems that way for me too, but don't give up. As long as you have all the stuff you don't understand (head rebuilding, block rebuilding) outsourced to a reputable shop, you'll be fine.
You swap over to the y8 intake manifold because of the truly staggering difference in air flow from an OEM intake to an OEM intake. The y8 intake manifold is designed for the higher air needs of a vtec engine, but on a non-vtec engine it will STILL improve air flow. Just look at the two pics I posted earlier. The y8 one is huge and open compared to the tiny and... really, pitiful y7 intake.
Don't give up hope. Read read read!

OBD1 is on board diagnostics. There's an OBD0, OBD1, OBD2a, and OBD2b that I know of so far. OBD1 is MUCH easier to work with for boost so everyone converts. Hence, use an OBD1 computer and (for me) an OBD2b (1999-2000 Civic is OBD2b, 1996-1998 is OBD2a) conversion harness.
You can use the y7 intake manifold if you want. But you can squeeze a little more power out of the engine using a y8.
