Default Catalytic converter

Folks, first of all nice forum.

I have Civic EX 2001 and it is making a rattling sound. SOmetime back the catalytic converter shield fell off because of rust and since then the car is making a rattling sound. Although I was told that if I take the car to a mechanic they would cut-off any left-over metallic remants of the shield. Is that true?

I am not sure whether I will have to replace the catalytic converter itself. I understand that a catalytic converter helps reduce pollution So I am ready to go for a replacement, but at the same time I don't want to get ripped off by a dealer or car shop if the cat need not be replaced.

I am in Mass. and we have annual inspections and I very well know I may fail inspection if its the catalytic converter. Any suggestions / feedback is welcome.

Regards

Chances are you've just got another loose heat shield somewhere. Get undre the car, and look/feel around to see if anything is noticably loose. Or, you can be like me when i first got my civic and it was rattling, and remove all them sumbitchs
