Default confused on converting DX to EX???help

so i have a 97 DX MT coupe

i want a whole new exhaust system

but im a little confused on the conversion... and what parts go where

do cars have 2 catylitic converters?

i want DC sports headers 4-2-1
does this come with my first cat?

then down pipe / cat in the next section??

then sp2/ws2/magnaflow cat back exhaust...?
this has a resonator /cat? in the same bulge?

if someone could pm me or reply on this that would be great thanks!

On your car the engine is a D16Y7, it has 1 cat just like all honda's. But your cat is apart of the exhaust manifold. So when you replace your stock manifold with a header it will replace the cat also. When you add a header to stay legal you need a mid pipe(the pipe that goes from the header under the engine) then you need a aftermarket cat, then the cat back system. Not only do you need to replace the cat that the header gets rid of but you need to extend the wires for your secondary oxygen sensor so that it will be able to reach a position after the cat. You have 2 oxygen sensors, one before the cat and one after. The stock wires on the second oxygen sensor are not long enough to extend past where the new cat will be located.

You system is like this

Manifold/oxygen sensor/cat all in one location
Another Oxygen sensor
Mid pipe
"cat" back

The new system will be like this

Manifold with first oxygen sensor on it
mid pipe
cat
2nd oxygen sensor
cat back exhaust system

I'd like to add that if you have everything for an EX, it should bolt right up, no problems whatsoever. But, not having ever done the conversion, I can't guarantee it

Also, you can either manually lengthen the o2 sensor wires, or you can buy extensions (I know Password:JDM sells them for like $25) that will plug right in, making for a cleaner install.

Also, vonjason, if I could ask a favor from you... when you do the swap, do you think you could do a how-to style write-up with pics, parts list, etc? It's one of those things that would be nice to have on the forums for future reference.

If you do this, just make sure that you don't lengthen between the o2 sensor and its harness, you have to lengthen the engine harness.

Mid pipe is just the lower half of the header. The header and mid pipe come together.

For the best prices on the header and the catback, search ebay for the exact exhaust you want. Use live.com to search for it and recieve 30% of your money back.

For the cat and O2 sensor extension here's some links to good prices:

ill be doing my ex conversion soon enough on my dx
im just waiting for my EX cat in the mail and my O2 extender wires. im hoping my swap will be trouble free!!!! im just going to try and buy a new mounting flange for the cat and cut back my stock midpipe and weld it in there to fit. hopefully all will go good and ill have no CEL light! i should get my catconverter saturday, tho not sure about my o2 extender wires...
i could care less about staying enviromentaly friendly.... BUT i dont want that CEL light ON!
