Default Is Exhaust Worth It?

Hi Guys,
I was interested in hp/tq gains from different exhaust systems, and if the gains justify the cost (and in many cases, the noise).

First off lets rule out necessity, and what I mean by that is if you've got any type of force induction (including NO2) setup then changing the exhaust would most likely be necessary.

What I am concerned with here is modifying exhaust on stock applications. I read the thread on high flow cats and there was some hp/tq gain, but not much. With respect to the muffler and piping how much hp can you expect to make by modding it? Is it as simple as dropping $200 on a muffler and boom you have 10 more hp? I did notice that for my D16Y8 the exhaust diameter was larger then on my D15 for obvious reasons (VTEC and larger displacement). But have the Japanese engineers really figured out optimum piping diameter? Does anyone know of a link to someone's dyno runs showing the effects of different exhausts?

Lets also, for the sake of my preference, rule out exhaust mods that sound like weed wackers in a rice field. I can't stand listening to people's high pitch fart sounding butt cheek slapping exhaust on a car that DOESN'T move. This is my opinion and I am sorry for those that I have offended... IF the loud fart noise were to produce 50+ hp gains or something to that effect then feel free to rip into me. Otherwise please keep a resonator in mind when replying and offering suggestions.

Thanks for your inputs regardless

it's a civic. no exhaust will give you more than 5HP on a naturally aspirated setup. get any brand that you like. if you just care about looks, get a magnaflow muffler welded on for like $120. if you care for the little HP that you gain (top end too btw), you can get 2.25 piping (get custom; it's cheaper), a longer resonator, a hi-flow cat, a muffler of your choice (read the sticky for brand names). note though, that getting a full catback is much more expensive.

dito.... unless you got a turbo or whatnot that needs to breathe better than youll never feel a difference in HP....

not the butt dyno youll feel it for awhile till the gains on your butt dyno wears down. hahaha

but for me exaust is more about that nice sound......

I was gonna say looks and cost play a factor as well, but I was getting the evil eye from an instructor so I had end the post early. I think dual exhaust, when done right, look slick. If it sounds good that's even better. Although in all honesty 90% of the Honda's I see on the road (with modded exhausts) sound like some variation of a painful high pressure fart.

I got it! Say you have a really hot chick in the car, but you have to rip some ***... well punch the accelerator a little and you have the perfect coverup for whatever you unleash into your seat[:'(]

dual exhausts on a civic looks bad however way you look at it. on an s2k, it's okay. not on a civic. and if 90% of the hondas you see sound bad, then you must live in riceville. might as well join the crowd... also, i can't emphasize enough, how retarded it is for people to compare a bad sounding muffler to a fart. bad muffler's don't sound like farts; they just sound bad because they're raspy. if i knew who first coined that term, i'd kick them in the face...

Does your muffler sound like a fart? Your awefully defensive... I knew I would offend someone... It's all in good fun man lighten up.

And you could say I coined the term if it would make you feel better, but there is no sense in wanting to get physical over it. The majority of others would consider that retarded.

But your right people are sensitive about their cars, I should not poke fun about such things.

Raspy exhaust sounds great I retract everything I said.

my exhaust setup: stock piping + magnaflow muffler (model 14857)
gained HP? probably not.
sounds good? i'd think so.
looks better? yup. shiny > dull piping
happy? yes.

do the same for your car. install something, and ask yourself those questions.
