Kappa,

is the reason for not going over 2.5" because there wouldn't be enough back pressure?

Yeah, that's right. However, most people say that too little backpressure reduces horsepower, but this is not the case. It simply moves it up higher in the rpm spectrum.

No, its not a lack of backpressure. thats an old musclecar myth. backpressure is BAD, no matter what. the bigger piping hurts power because of the exhaust velocity. ive got a writeup on it here somewhere. heres a new sticky.

like kappa said..cat back is from the cat converter back..full exhaust is from manifold back..

So a cat back is better and produces more hp?

basically, a cat-back is part of the whole system, the system also includes the cat and the header. but a cat-back is better than just a muffler.
