Default Intake...too loud?

Okay. So I picked up a 95 Civic DX and it came with a cold air intake. When I punch the gas or if the engine works hard (such as climbing a hill) the intake is soo loud. To the point that when I leave my car my ears are ringing.

Are these intakes supposed to be that loud in the cabin? Any way I can muffle it a bit? I like the deep throaty sound when I punch it; but after a while it just gets really annoying. I live in an area with stop & go traffic so I end up punching it all the time, unlike on the freeway it sounds just fine.

that's actually a short ram intake, and they are notorious for being louder...

a CAI would make it a quieter, but does it have an aftermarket exhaust? A cheap/old exhaust system would make a much larger difference in sound then just an intake.

what else is done to the car? you might just want to find a stock airbox and put it back in, you're not getting that much performance gain from it anyway

I like the look and performance I'm getting. I notice that my accelleration is alot more punchy. I just hate the annoying and potentially defening sound.

Could you recommend 3 other intakes that would be more muffled but could still give me a bit of a performance boost?

I've been looking on ebay but don't want to end up in the same situation.

pretty much any intake is going to make the same amount of noise. A cold-air intake, however, seems quieter since the filter is farther away from the cabin. If you want it quiet, go back to the stock intake. And as for the performance gain, well... I can pretty much garuntee that someone could put the stock intake back on without your knowledge and you wouldn't notice a difference in power the next time you drove it. When you put the SRI in, it seemed faster because you were expecting it to make your car faster.

Hmm....

Nice looking engine compartment vs. eventually going deaf. That's a hard one.

Really hesitating going back to stock. On the other hand, not liking the ringing sound in my head.

Any other suggestions? There's got to be a brand/style/model of intkae out there where this won't be an issue...

go up to autozone or checkers (or where ever) and get an extension, they offer a cold air extender for like 50 bucks. that will reduce your noise
