Default my other car's exhaust problem

most of you know that i have my 97 dx and the mods I've made to it, what most of you don't know is that i also have a winter civic its a 93 ex nicknamed the poopy civic lol. anyhow i bought it 2 summers ago just for driving in the winter because its loaded with rust and my other car is way too nice and way too low to drive in the winter. anyhow to the point the other day i was driving along and was pulled over for 47 in a 35 (wasn't doing 47 i was doing 43ish) and for my exhaust when i purchased the car it had no cat and a crap muffler that popped when you revved it up, so me being a smart 17year old at the time took a friends fart can and welded it on so now my car is essentially straight piped. so i was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on how to quiet the car cheaply. i am in between jobs and my gf is paying my mortgage for me right now sad yes i know. so i need a cheap way to shut up the car

thanks

i looked around briefly and read that a few people have put steel wool, copper or steel pot scrubbers, or a rolled up window screen inside the muffler. basically any metal which will allow a sufficient airflow when wadded inside would work. gotta clamp something on the end though to make sure the inserted material doesnt shoot out. hmm, maybe a bench clamp or something along these lines to hold it in?
