Wants it to be louder but dont know the pros and cons of doing this. I was just thinking about putting a straight piece of pipe there. Any opinions?

 

Yeah, it's louder. It's also hotter. I can feel the heat coming from under the shifter. My friend had straight piping put from the headers to the muffler before he sold the car to me. Guess it's less restriction.

 

Dont do it...

just buy an aftermarket muffler if you just want loud...
not that i encourage you to make your car sound ricey... but ok.

 

pros:
1. you gain at most a measly 1 WHP over a high flow catalytic converter.

cons:
1. it's illegal
2. you will not pass any sort of emissions testing or visual inspection
3. you can be fined a hefty amount of money if a cop pulls you over and looks under the car and notices
4. raspy and nasty exhaust tone
5. makes your exhaust spew tons of carbon monoxide (which is poisonous btw)
6. kills the environment way more than it would if you used your catalytic converter

I read somewhere online, they did a dyno of a high flow cat and test pipe, both basically gained the same amount of HP.

Since you sound like you just want obnoxious loud, by the cheapest "JDM" exhaust you can find

If you want nice low deep tone that can get loud but not raspy, get a nice greddy sp2 or apexi ws2 exhaust. Adding a short ram intake will also help. Maybe a nice aftermarket header with a high flow cat will help.

 

cons:
-raspier sounding exhaust
-doesn't pass visual inspection* anywhere
-doesn't pass sniffer test in emissions testing
-ILLEGAL

pros:
-"10whp" gain. I'd guess it to actually be between 1 and 3 horsepower at most assuming your cat isn't clogged. Honeycomb does not restrict flow that much.


*I'm not even talking an emissions test. Any state that has an annual/bi-annual inspection will not pass a car with an emissions control device removed.


inthezone, I've read the same article; I believe it was on Super Street's web site. Now tell me the last time you saw accurate gain figures coming from a magazine. Not to mention Super Street is extremely untrustworthy with their articles; I stopped reading their trash after they featured a riced-out EP3 "built on a student budget". I went to college and I know there is no way you can afford $3,000 worth of Bride seats on a college student budget, and that doesn't even include any of the rest of the car.

 

well I think that same site did a dyno of a 99 or 00 ex with intake, header, exhaust. Each one added around 2-4 HP lol

But I haven't searched for other things to prove something right or wrong.
