Can anyone tell me the point of the Jetta TDI?
So you want a diesel GTI? I dunno why VW even wants to make one, yea it has better accelerationg but it isn't gonna be as fast. SO might beat a gasoline GTI for a few sec, but the gas GTI will be back with a vengence once the diesel runs out of power and hits its 3k redline.
There are plenty of reasons to get it!
-fuel aconomy
-towing capacity (I'm sure it could tow much more than any civic, not to mention the hybrids)
-engine reliability (electrical equipment in newer VWs is garbage)
-looks (looks better than 90% of the hybrids out there)
-price (cheaper than most hybrids)
-doesn't have uber expensive battaries that hybrids do (which don't last very long)
-tunable (you can extract a lot of hp out of these with proper mods)
-can be easily converted to vegetable oil injection (which is free, and practically unlimited - you can get used oil from just about any restaurant)
-has a really nice interior (compared to ugly interiors that most hybrids have)
So my question is this. Why buy a hybrid if you can get a 2000 or so TDI for fraction of the cost that will save you equal amount of fuel? They are not cost-effective either. I'd much rather buy a regular civic DX - great MPG at a fraction of a cost of a hybrid (with all the money I could save from getting a regular civic, rather then a hybrid, I could afford to pay for gas for a few years). To visually show this (simplyfication) - Civic DX =$$ + fuel $$$ and Hybrid = $$$$ + fuel$$

so your saying the same oil in my fries can power a car? makes me hungry.
so your saying the same oil in my fries can power a car? makes me hungry.
you start it on fuel, then switch it over to the oil, the before you shut it off, you switch it back to regular diesel fuel again. and you have to have a heater for the oil, and good filter.

exactly right. And you obviously need another tank for oil

Oxymoron
Not exactly - It's a fuel saver that you could also use to tow something with if the need arises (instead of buying a car specificall for towing)
Irrelevant unless you're comparing it to domestics.
It's relevant because diesel engines last more than gas engines
Matter of opinion. I will admit Priuses are funny looking though
I agree
Starts at 21,290, making price difference marginal at best (Hybrid Civic starts at 21,890, Prius starts at 21,725)
well, that's true if you're comparing brand new ones
I guess that's why they come with 7 year warranties specifically for the battery?
Didn't think about that, but it's a good point because I doubt that anybody would be keeping a car like this for such a long time - it's not a project, nor a collectible
This is a non-issue for the average consumer. ANY car is tuneable. http://car-reviews.automobile.com/ne...-of-speed/162/
^^not saying that's fast, just making my point.
Turbo cars are easier to tune
Again, opinion. I've been in my friends Prius and I promise you it does not lack creature comforts.
meh, it's an opinion, but I hated driving that car - ergonomics are teh suck, plus I don't remember it comming with heated seats and such
I completely agree with you on this. Believe it or not, I'm not defending hybrids. They are a gimmick as it stands right now. But you're comparing something Used vs. New, which is not what I was talking about.
