Coal mine
ORIGINAL: Smokem
You know why they "need" more coal miners, cause they lose many to early health related deaths and deadly accidents. $20 / hour is DICK! That's how much you want to put your health and maybe your life on the line for? Way too many jobs pay WAY more than that and you're not risking your well-being. Stay in school and good, well paying jobs will come. This is by no means meant to demean the coal miner or the profession. Only that if you have choices, make them wisely.

I was talking to some people and they say they need some coal miners. So i looked futher into it and you have to take a 32hr class four days from 8am till 4pm in the mine. The class starts march 17 and runs for four days. The starting pay is $20hr I am going to call them tomorrow and get my name on the class list.I was just wondering what you all though about this.

No one can ever be faulted for making an honest living. When bills need to be paid, they don't give a **** how you made your money, they just want it. Only it sounds like you have choices . My point was for you to notget too short sighted or blinded.Secretaries andoffice workers make the same and no one is at risk.Ask anyone doing that job and they will tell you all about the pitfalls( no pun intended). I had a very good friend from Morgantown who is the only one left in his entire family ( males ) and he was the ONLY one that didn't follow the legacy of the mines. I tell my kids everyday, if you're going to get up and work, make it count! If the mine opportunity fills your immediate needs and you can come away from it safely, it's a no brainer. You will make lots more out of college so keep that part going. Good luck with whatever you do, just keep all your doors open.

$5/hr is $10k/year
$10/hr is $21k/year
$15/hr is $31k/year
$20/hr is $41k/year
$25/hr is $52k/year
$30/hr is $62k/year
$35/hr is $73k/year....
I think you get my point... $20/hr isn't that great.. respectable for someone with no degree, but a union, certified welder can make more than that a hour (pre-union dues etc)
hell, even a non-union general laborer can make $15/hr with a construction company
to put it into perspective...
$100k/year is $48.07/hr
all of that is pre-taxes...
of that $20/hr, expect to take home about 80% after federal & state taxes.... so really $16/hr
$10/hr is $21k/year
$15/hr is $31k/year
$20/hr is $41k/year
$25/hr is $52k/year
