A torque converter is a fluid coupling. It is the automatic transmissions form of clutch. Think of it as two fans facing each other. One fan is connected to the engine and the other fan is connected to the transmission. When the engine turns, the fan throws fluid at the transmission fan. This turns the transmission. This allows you to hit the brake and stay in first gear. When you press on the brake, the fan on the trans side stops and the engine still throws fluid at the trans fan but the fan doesn't move. Try www.howstuffworks.com or ask questions if you still don't understand from my crude explanation.
