i think that i have lost track of this conversation...

did you have to take the engine out to change the clutch? or were you just making the comment that to pull the engine its best to drop it out the bottom? when i worked for dodge, we oddly had a few newer GMs come in and many of them had to have the engines dropped out the bottom...

hmm, i thought that a clutch kit usually comes with a new flywheel. I'm dreading the time when I have to replace the clutch on my BMW. Those are expansive, and transmission looks way too big/heavy to do it at home

do you have the getrag tranny?

when the gearbox in mine went, it cost something like a grand for a new one, and we put a new sachs clutch in..it came complete..but i dont recall the price of the clutch assembly...but it pales in comparison to the gearbox...however, the sachs kit was very nice..it came with new exhaust gaskets and everything, since you have to remove the exhaust to pull the tranny.

Yeah, it's a getrag. The only manual transmissions that BMW used in those years (pre-2000 I think) were getrag or ZF (not sure of the full name. Autos were made by GM (in US spec cars) and usually fail shortly after the car hits 100k mile mark. BTW, Sachs is OEM for BMW. The aftermarket would be UUC

No I was talking about when having to pull the engine. Ofcourse I did not have to have the engine pulled to replace the clutch.

I saw/helped take the tranny out of a Impala and a Civic (01-05). Both times the front end (lower control arms and the box thing that connects them) had to be taken out cause they were dropping the tranny. I was thinking that it woulda been easier to get it from the top with a cherry picker.

Nah, on Civics it's a lot easier to just drop it out the bottom. The same is true for just about every other FWD car...

$900 CAD for a clutch replacement here and thats standard rate at any garage. Maybe 6-700 if you get a read. Aluminum flywheels runa bout $399 and install is atleast 200 bucks.
