use gimp all the time cause I am a linux user. I think it is great and haven't had time to explore half the features.

I never used photoshop mostly cause I always had the gimp and it met my needs and mostly cause I use linux cause I just want my computer to work and I don't want to have to do maintenance to it and buy stuff that makes up for the OS faults - i.e defrag, anti-virus, anti-spyware, or anti anything else.

use gimp if it meets your needs then you are golden. if it doesn't then try photoshop. if it doesn't meet your needs either you can always make do with the gimp.

Use youtube to learn a lot of the basics of gimp. There are tutorials on most everything.

I have found that, at least to me, Gimp is easier to figure out. I don't like reading instructions, I like playing around with the different stuff. This worked for me with Gimp... Ps, not so much.
