If you're interested in buying a cheap 1911, look into Para-Ordnance's older models. The Canadian-built ones were actually pretty good... after they moved the whole operation to North Carolina the quality and customer service kind of went down the drain.

And an AR15 will be cheaper than a 1911... I think I might have mentioned it, but I have 3 AR builds planned out... the first one will be a standard carbine with a 16" barrel... it'll be fully functional with under $1,000 spent. $1,000 would buy you a used Kimber or half of a Nighthawk. Personally, I'd trust my life to a 5.56x45mm... I know the "crackhead" argument will come up, but I'd love to know how often that actually happens. Besides, I think 30 rounds of 5.56 will put someone down just as quickly as 7-10 of .45ACP.

Whoops, completely forgot about the pictures I promised. Anyway, I shot some quick ones:

And since I now have the XD, I'm thinking an AR build is up next. Once I free up some money, I'll be inquiring about ordering a lower receiver from my favorite store in Lexington

And since I don't think I ever posted the plans for the AR, here's the run-down of the build:

- Spike's Tactical stripped lower receiver
- Magpul MIAD trigger guard
- DPMS LRPK (Lower Reciever Parts Kit)... I'm pretty much just using the springs and detents from it instead of tracking down every small part I'll need
- Vltor E-MOD stock kit (includes lower receiver extension tube and buffer spring)
- Hogue pistol grip
- DPMS TiN-coated trigger
- DPMS TiN-coated hammer
- JP Enterprises fire control group springs
- Stag Arms 2H complete upper receiver
- Vltor CASV-EL free-float handguard
- Magpul RVG
- Magpul AFG
- EOTech 552 Holographic Weapon Sight

I also have an AR15 SPR build planned and an AR57 build planned, but I'm going to finish each one before starting a new one (though I may buy all three lowers at the same time if it saves on shipping or something like that).

I feel pretty safe right now between the S&W M&P15-22, Para-Ordnance P12.45 and the SA-XD40. I'll feel safer once there's a Beretta M9 and two home defense ARs, one chambered in 5.7x28mm

Anyway, I got bored today:

But yeah, can't wait for tax returns... The XD will be receiving three new mags (two 12-rounders and an extra 9-rounder), bringing its total to 5, the Para will be getting two extra mags (bringing the total to 3), and it will also be receiving a new grip safety with an extended beavertail, as well as a new thumb safety and slide release, both with extended beavertails. I'll probably also build an AR lower, if not an entire rifle. Also, I'll be stocking up on ammunition... you can never have too much of it, and I go through .45ACP at the range like it's going out of style.

(Pictures from AR15.com's "The Gun Room Picture Thread")

When I buy a house I am SO going to convert one of the rooms into a gun room.

Oh, and my to-buy list now amounts to 10 guns and $12,000:
(in no particular order)
-Century International Arms Golani Sporter (AK variant)
-FN Herstal PS90
-FN Herstal SCAR 16S
-Custom AR15 carbine (5.56x45mm)
-Custom AR15 SPR (5.56x45mm)
-Custom AR57 (5.7x28mm)
-FPK Dragunov (I know they're incredibly mediocre firearms but I just really want one for some reason)
-Weatherby PA459 (12ga shotty)
-Beretta M9
-Springfield Armory XD45 Tactical

Eh, you can do better than that. Obvious hinges are obvious. But the idea is sound.

Yeah, I'm sure some company makes some sort of inverted hinge or something. Either way, I don't plan on buying a house for another four years, so I have plenty of time to plan things out. First I'll need to buy the house and see what I'm working with, and second I'll need to know if I need room for reloading or not. Obviously if I don't reload, I won't need as much space as I would if I did reload.

Actually, I just thought of an extremely devious method of hiding the entry way: put heavy-duty sliders on the side of whatever you cover the door with (ie, bookshelf, entertainment center, etc) and have it so it slides back into an entry way, allowing enough room for access to a door on the side that opens into the gun room. You could bring trim work or whatever out to meet the cabinet which would hide the sliders; you wouldn't know it could slide back just by looking at it. Add some sort of physical locking mechanisms (think something like a door's dead-bolt) on the inside of the cabinet or whatever so you couldn't just lean up against it and find out it slides and you're in business.

i worked at a cabinet shop for a while, and hidden hinges are fairly common, and cheap. dont make your faux bookshelf or whatever too heavy, and use more than two hinges and i imagine it would work quite well. that gun room is you posted is ****. no, super ****. i love it.

Yeah, I figured there would be some form of inconsp icuous (word filter) hinge I'd be able to use. I definitely want a hidden room so in the event of a burglary I'll still have my guns.

I'm thinking I'll probably have to use four hinges as the cabinet/bookshelf would have to be wide enough to hide a door, so there will probably be a decent amount of weight involved. But who said anything about faux? If you're going to hide it, you might as well make it convincing

I actually saw another form of hidden door last night that was pretty cool... the trim beside a recessed shelf was on sliders; slide the trim out, pull a locking pin out, the shelf swings out on hinges. It was a little more visually apparent that something was up, though.
