Got rear ended today. Pretty much sucks. Need a new bumper, trunk, and tail lights, hope there is not further damange. Can anyone tell me if insurance companies write you a check or do they write the check to whatever company repairs your car? And should i be very firm how much money i get, i know alot of times they try to s**t you on the money they will give you. Im going tomorrow to get some estimates tomorrow so i can send them to the driver at faults insurance company. Any suggestions for dealing with this type of thing would be great, i know i need to get estimates and things like that. Anything else i really need to do?

 

Has the accident been reported to both insurance companies? If not, do so immediately by phone. Discuss in detail the recommended course of action with your insurance agent. My insurance company recommended body shops where they guaranteed the repair work. Again discuss with your agent.

At least for my insurance company, you take your car to your chosen shop and get an estimate. The insurance company will typically either cover the cost or cut you a check for that amount. Before you proceed, however, make sure that the insurance company has faulted the other driver completely, which is typical for a rear end accident. I was rear ended and the other party eventually claimed that I backed into them!! I did not have my car repaired until an arbitrator ruled that the other driver was completely at fault, which was several months later.
