if you give your dog a quality dog food that doesn't have alot of fillers you won't have to feed it as much. i usually look to see if a dog food has a meat as it's first ingrediant. if it has alot of fillers like corn or some other crap it doens't get the nutrients it needs so it needs more food. i use purina one puppy food for our puppies and purina adult dog food with glucosamine for joints for the older dogs which is a good idea for big dogs. a puppy will need fed 2-3 times a day usually like 1-2 cups if it's a quality food. we feed our adult dogs once a day our golden retriever gets 6 cups a day the black labs and german shepard get 7 cups and all there wieghts are right where they need to be.

 

i feed my dogs twice a day 6am 6pm

its not good to leave food in the bowl all day
give them the appropriate amount of food and if they dont eat it within 1 hr or so take the rest away and dont feed them again until the next scheduled feeding time. grazing is not good

 

While we are on the subject... my little dog (Jack Russel) is really agressive with children. We have to put him outside when the neices and nephews come over for fear that he will snap at them like he has done in the past. When the kids come over he shakes like he is scared, I guess because he knows I will spank him if he gets out of line. The vet said he would calm down after we got him fixed so I let him stay inside the last time and he ended up sanpping at my toddler niece. I really love our dog but we may have to get rid of him if it keeps up. Anybody have any suggestions?

Feed puppy twice a day and maybe down to once a day when she is older. I prefer to feed early in the day it depends on your schedule. I don't like to feed a big meal before the pup is cooped up all night or he might make a mess of himself. Don't let pup loose unsupervised in the house till you know she is housetrained and won't eat your stuff( I try to leave lots of toys around the floor to chew on for pup), and every room can be a new territory for puppy, just because he got corrected for peeing in one room doesn't mean he will think he can't in another room, dogs don't generalize like we do. I put my pup in a cage during the night with chew toys and she's out all day with me.

 

He's adopting. I dont think they are gonna give him a guarantee on her hips.

oh yeah don't forget don't give your dog raw hides they have fermaldahide (sp) in them and if you give to many makes them real ancy and not good for digestion. also with shepards they have alot of digestion problems make sure she is not real active after she eats......

 

i see that there are some foods specifically for germans. made just for their digestive problems. best go with those
