The purpose is correction. Also, you can't let people like those kids back into society. The goal is to put those kids into jail for however long and when they come out they will not be dumb ****s. What is the alternative to putting them in jail? You can't let them go and hope they won't do it again. I personally favor eye for an eye justice. Those turds should get life in prison. They killed a man b/c they were "bored", they have no right to live in society with normal people. That **** about wanting to help troubled teens is just a sob story to get the sentance lessened.

Eye for eye is a revenge, not correction. From the revenge point of view death sentence is THE answer in such a case.
But if you start talking about correction, things are getting way more complex…

Eye for an eye is a great example of why it should be applied in the world in this case. Those 3 little ****s killed a homless person, so they should be beat to death. Justice would then, and only then, be served.

Ben, I did not have any doubt you are looking at this from the revenge point of view

Punishment isn't just revenge or correction, it is a little bit of both. There has to be a "revenge"(i don't think thats the right word to use) element b/c otherwise people will have no incentive to not commit crime. There also has to be a correction element so that people don't become criminals for the rest of thier lives (you can't execute/lock up every criminal).

Actually you gave one more reason in your first post - isolation, this one I missed from my initial list, and this one is probably the major thing that defines the punishment. We just fear that our correction part does not work, and we just isolate them from society for arbitrary period, hoping that they would not survive it...

Again, if we were judging this from eye for an eye point of view (if you don't like r-word), the only feasible answer would be death sentence…

i wonder if the defense used the arguemnt that the homeless man wasnt doing anything with his life, and thus would affect no one with his death....<it makes sense but is cold as ****.....may have helped reduce sentence if you could sway the jury like this...
but who honestly would go with it?

i don't know what they do in russia at that age when you're bored...

but when i was 15, my friends and i didn't go around beating on homeless people when we were bored... we went to the local court and played some hoops... or some football at the local park... or did something of that nature....

and i grew up living in a rough neighborhood
