RE: xbox 360
They've been trying to fix it with better cooling and smaller processor sizes, but it still happens. Especially cause not all the ones in stores are the newer ones. They'll usually fix em free tho.
I personally wouldnt get a PS3 or Xbox 36 just yet, as thier respective companies plan on upgrading the hardware and whatnot in the future. (Although PS3's are probably gonna suffer with a hardware downgrade, right now the PS2 backwards compatibility is through hardware but soon it'll be through software, which isn't nearly as good...)
The Wii is really the only safe bet hardware-wise right now. Nintendo doesn't plan on upgrading it because they don't need to.

RE: xbox 360
where are all of the xbox fanboys here to go on about how the 360s are the highest quality system on the market?
the Wii is cool alright..if you want to play a bunch of games for little kids...as that seems to be all i ever see for it.
my ps3, before running any system upgrades, played EVERY one of my PS2 games, and all of the PS1 games that i could find.
the xbox has more games (its been around longer, it should have more games) and evidently has a better online system, which im not concerned with...but it also has something like a 30% failure rate, which i consider to be unacceptable. i want to buy a 360, as there are a few driving games that id like to have, such as forza 2, but im not going to buy a system with a 1 in 3 failure rate. i had two original xbox's fail on me, and the one that i have now gives me a hard time, now and then...its obvious that microsoft just doesnt care about the quality of their hardware...as people will buy it because its cheaper and currently has more games.
