GinOoOo is right it sound like a loose heat shield, check the manifold and under the car. Most sounds like that are cause bye a rusted off bolt or rusted out hole on one of the heat shields.

ya just crawl under the car with a good size stick and just start kinda smaking things.... not REALY HARD.... but hard enough that if they are loose they will rattle more.... just keep bangen around the exhast till ya find that spot.... then look at what is actualy loose... either tighten it up IF YOU CAN.... OR if its busted just try and remove the whole thing....

or just use some self drilling screws around that bolt thats busted or striped and find a spot thats clear and just screw it tight....

if your car makes a rattling sound at a certain rpm, then 99 times out of 100, it's the exhaust heat shield rattling because one of the bolts have broken off or have come loose. as for the maintenance light, i'mabout 90% sure it activates at 3,000 miles, if not then definately 5,000 miles.

i believe to turn the maitenace light off after u've done service like oil change u press the reset button and hold it, while holding it with the key in the ignition, turn the key to the 2nd mode(just before cranking the engine) and keep holding the reset button until the light dissapears then let go and take the key out. i believe thats how its done tho i havnt done it in a lil while..

Good luck. I had the same problem and it turned out to be the heat shield. I basically pryed that sucker off. No parking on tall grass for me.

well I had a few extra minutes today, so I got under my car (as best i could without a lift), and looked around--didnt see/hear/feel any loose bolts in the heatshield.

I did some more rev'ing too, and there is a noticeable rattle when I turn the car on, but its shortlived (sounds like its coming from something along the way to the exhaust), and then it just grinds in the 3500-4000 range, N, N w/ clutch in, 1st and 2nd. Like when you overrev in 1st, your engine will be noticeably louder, and hum i guess you'd call it, but when I hit 3500ish, it just sounds like something is grinding/ or metal scraping stone kinda sound.

I think I'm gonna take it to the shop and just see if they can fix it, because I'd rather not risk have something falling out from under my car all of a sudden. =/

ORIGINAL: Solid_Snake

in 96-00 Civics it will turn orange at about 5k miles and red at 7k miles..

Just insert your key in the little slot next to it in the gauge cluster and it will turn green again
thanks, i had the same problem
