Default RE: "Maintenance Required" indicator

Alright, I know this is the question most frequently asked - Why is the maintenance indicator going green to yellow to red? I have the same question. But before i go to the mechanic, I want to confirm. My indicator had been yellow for quite some time. Then in between it went to green and then yellow again. I did regular maintenance and got my timing belt changed couple of weeks back. Suddenly, today I found that the indicator has turned red. Why is that? Somebody suggested that it is a timer in the car that cycles and turn the indicator at set miles. Is that true? If so, then should I try to reset it? If it is a genuine problem, will it come back to red again? If not then I think its better to get it checked with mechanic. (But again I just got my timing belt changed). Red indicator is a little scary.

Some more facts:
model - 99 EX coupe
milleage - 103K
timing belt changed at - 103K + Oil change.
