mechanics CAN be SAE-certified because I know one.

subaru requires you to take your car to a subaru dealership or an SAE-certified mechanic to prevent warranty nullification.

That's another reason to never buy a brand-new car...

Looking around on www.subaru.com i found.....

Who Makes These Warranties:
These warranties are made by Subaru of America, Inc. ("SOA")*, Subaru Plaza, P. O. Box 6000, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034-6000

It's close enough to SAE i guess. Not being "knit picking", just having fun. If we all really listened to how we talk, we use so many acronyms every day it ain't funny. I know at work if someone outside the company comes in, they can't unterstand anything because we use so many acronyms. Is it true that the Honda "Civic" got its name from an acronym? The Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion CVCC engine that was introduced in '72.

Maybe....

that's SAE. most decent local garages have at least one certified SAE mechanic on staff.

Anybody know of a good, reliable mechanic in the Northern IL, Souther WI area (Crystal Lake)?
I'll pay the $695 if I have to but I would love to save some money and find a cheaper place.
damn dude! it sounds like everything's really expensive up there! here in central fl. the ave price for that is around $300 and around $450 at the higher priced places.
myself, i get $250 for it, but i dont try to rape people when they come in too! lol
it's not really that hard to do yourself though! the most dificult thing for a reg person to do on it is getting the bolt loose on the crank shaft pulley. you can rent the tool to get it off pretty easy though. other than that, you just have to make sure you get everything in time when putting it back together, and that's not hard, especially when you have a book to show you all of the timing marks. good luck!!!!!

lol that's ASE ! lol it stands for Automotive Service Excellence
i've been a master ase certified tech for about 15 years. and yes anyone who has been working at most any real shop for at least 2 yrs [i think lol] can take the ASE tests and become certified if you pass. so you dont have to work at a dealership to get ASE certified. most dealerships require that their techs become ASE certified though. i got mine when i was working at toyota. most NAPA parts stores have aplication books for them. they have the tests 2 times a year, spring and fall
