1990 Civic DX - Alternator problems
I have a 1990 Honda Civic DX. I've owned it for 14 years. It has 320,000 km. At 252,000 I had the engine replaced due to a screw-up trying to fix a head gasket.
In the past 4 years, I have had the alternator changed 4 times. The first 3 were after-market. The last one was a Honda. The last one lasted almost 1 year.
Does anyone have any ideas on where I should look? The guy that replaced the alternators is a Honda qualified tech. We went with the aftermarket ones because they were cheaper. When the problem kept coming up, he suggested a Honda alternator. It hasn't lasted quite one year.
I run the a/c all the time. I'm not sure if this might cause a problem(?). I'm now thinking it might be something that occured when the new(er) engine was installed.
It's a great car, but the on-going alternator saga is starting to really frustrate me.
Thanks for any advice.

RE: 1990 Civic DX - Alternator problems
I wolud check all the wiring harnesses that is related to the alternator. It quite possible when they put the replacement motor they could have damage some wiring. It will be a pain to track it down because it is so intermittent. Good Luck!

i had the same problem with my prelude. a few things you can check are: the grounds, make sure they are well affixed and not rusty. Another good thing to check is your fuse block, (the one under the hood) often times the wireing under the fuse block starts to corrode due to weather causing alternator problems.
